The goji berry plays a lead role in Chinese herbal remedies and is even venerated by some. The Chinese attribute a broader spectrum of positive effects to this berry than to any other product in their treasure trove of traditional natural remedies. It is an indispensible component of countless herbal formulas.

The small, red berry is used to fortify the blood, liver and kidneys, to combat weakness and impotence, support the immune system, aid in the treatment of cardiac complaints and high blood pressure, as well as to maintain good vision. It also helps fight dizziness, tinnitus and headache, and so much more. Aside from the fruit itself, the leaves, the seeds and even the skin and the roots are used. In rural areas, where traditional herbal medicine has best been preserved, this brilliant red berry has remained a major component of daily nutrition.

We find it in stews, soups and sauces and, in its dried form, also chewed like a raisin. Goji berries are also turned into refreshing and stimulating drinks such as tea, juice and wine.

The main region where it is cultivated is the autonomous province of Ningxia in north-central China, at the foot of a gigantic mountain massif, which in turn connects to the Himalayas to the north-east.  It is here that this little berry is even celebrated with its very own festival. Every year at harvest time in August, the locals celebrate with music, dance and speeches. Interestingly, you will encounter more centegenarians here than in any other part of China.

According to tradition, the Goji berry strengthens the quality of the Yin, creating a beneficial counterbalance to the hectic activity of today's fast lifestyle and attendant illnesses.  The result: calm, tranquility and reflectiveness.
