Its secondary phytochemicals include the group anthocyans/anthocyanidins. These are the same pigments we know from purple grapes.

ANTHOCYANS are strong antioxidants, which means, they are able to destroy so-called free radicals.

Free radicals are extremely aggressive substances from our environment, stirred up by environmental pollution, excessive radiation from the sun, ozone, poisons and pollutants. Free radicals seek out the body's own fats and oxidize them, very much like the rusting process in iron.

Every body cell is attacked around 10,000 times a day by free radicals. This is normal. A healthy immune system can deal with this quantity on its own. But when we are confronted by unhealthy foods, poor air, too much alcohol, nicotine and coffee, the number of these attacks on our body cells increases to the nth degree. In science, they refer to this as oxidative stress.

Free radicals cause us to age prematurely and also accelerate mental decline.  The amount of these anthocyans in chokeberries is about 5 times greater than in the purple grape. In other words, free radicals are destroyed more effectively than by any other berry or vegetable. Here is a comparison:

Anthocyan content of a variety of fruits per 100g fresh weight:

Chokeberry 800 mg*

Sweet cherry 180 mg*

Purple grape 165 mg*

Blueberry 165 mg*

Brambleberry 160 mg*

Raspberry 40 mg*

Strawberry 30 mg*

The Classic – Aronia Berry / Chokeberry Juice

The aronia juice is extracted from fresh aronia berries (chokeberries) through a gentle pressing process and bottled without any kinds of additives.

Just as the aronia berry itself, the juice is especially rich in polyphenols. Polyphenols are valuable, protective substances for the body, since they possess antioxidative capabilities. The natural polyphenol content of our aronia-berry juice is so high that it generally has 3 to 4 times as many antioxidants as store-bought pomegranate and cranberry juice.

The polyphenols in our juice, above all the anthocyanins and procyanidins, can be seen and tasted, for they are responsible for the intensively dark color and characteristically slightly tart flavor of the juice.

This valuable pressed juice of fresh aronia berries is pure enjoyment. But it also lends itself as part of a thirst-quenching spritzer and as a fruity addition to a cup of tea. There are basically no limits to its uses.
